White villages

The custom of whitewashing houses dates from Moorish times and in Andalucia this is still very popular. These "pueblos blancos" make an interesting itinerary offering an alternative to the very "touristy" Costa del Sol and go inland to discover some of Andalucia's Moorish past.

Depending on time available, various routes can be taken. Some of the most charming villages are Arcos de la Frontera, Jimena de la Frontera, Ubrique (a natural mountain fortress it was one of the last Republican strongholds in the Spanish Civil War), Gaucin, Casares, Ronda, Setenil, zahara de la Sierra (where you will find the oldest pinsapo-Spanish Fir) and Grazalema (home of a lush Natural Park. This town has the country's highest rainfall so be aware).

Medina sidonia and area are home to the many ranches that breed the fighting bulls for the bullring.

These "pueblos blancos" offer a range of attractions such as Moorish castles and city walls, narrow and sloping cobbled streets opening up onto pretty squares, fountains and patios, wooden shuttered windows flanked by pots of I colourful geraniums, fantastic views over surrounding countryside and of course the traditional bars and restaurants serving local specialities.
