Sevilla is famous for its intense heat, the April Fair, oranges, outstanding historical monuments and its tapas bars! In fact, the way to eat here is to "irde tapeo". This is done by visiting the tapas bars and sampling small portions of typical Sevillan food washed down with a cool beer or a glass of Manzanilla, the locally produced wine.
Sevilla is a lively city and the streets bustle both day and night. If you decide to go under your own steam, then the best place to start is Santa Cruz, which is the old Jewish quarter of the city, which houses the Alcazar, the cathedral and the Giralda Tower. Entrance to the Alcazar and the Giralda are restricted in peak periods because of the heavy flow of people, sometimes it is not possible to gain entry at all.
The cooling shaded gardens of the Reales Alcazares and the Gardens of Murillo are pleasant. The maze of streets, alley-ways, and patios, make this medieval quarter the most interesting part of the city to wander.
A stroll along the banks of the Guadalquivir is enjoyable, particularly the stretch between the bullring and the Torre del Oro, with its cars and bookstalls.
A boat ride along the river Gualdaquivir should not be missed, neither should an open top bus tour of the city, the perfect way to see the sights. These leave from the Torre del Oro on the east side riverbank. Almost opposite on the west side can be found the traditional gypsy quarter of Triana which is also worthy of a visit. Horse drawn carriages line up along the cobbled streets outside the cathedral and this is a novel and relaxing way to see parts of the city. Negotiate a price and route beforehand. A ride through the Maria Luisa Park is a real treat; offering much needed shade in the heat of the day. The April fair is also sited there.
If you do drive into the centre (better not to) use the underground car parks then walk or use public transport.
