A day's drive around Las Alpujarras will take you east from the Costa del Sol to the southern fertile slopes of the Sierra Nevada. The quaint towns and villages here are complimented by the wildlife and the culinary delights, such as the famous snow cured jamon serrano from Trevelez, Spain's highest village.
Lanjaron is a spa town, and its waters are bottled and sold all over Spain. Elderly visitors benefit from these spas and shop after shop sells herbal remedies.
Orgiva is another town worth a visit, particularly on a Thursday when the open-air market comes to life.
From Motril, the itinerary will take you to Besnar, Lanjaron, Pampaniera, Pitres, Portugos, up to Trevelez, back down to Juviles, Berchules, following the GR421 through Yegen, Ugijar, down to Torvizc on taking the C333 and returning via Orgiva.
Most of the villages and towns have evidence of Moorish occupation.
Spring and early summer, midweek, are the times to visit, from the point of view of wildlife, birdlife, climate and snowfall.
