This important and busy market town is easily reached north of Malaga. Market day is Friday, an interesting experience away from the tourist atmosphere of the Costa del Sol.
There is evidence that the area was inhabited in prehistoric times but nowadays the town is basically divided into two areas, the older quarter has many important historical churches, a 13th century Islamic Alcazaaba and other monuments to offer, the new commercial quarter, less so.
Very much worth a visit are the Dolmen caves, situated just outside the town. These prehistoric monuments are amongst the most important in Spain and the Cueva de Menga is said to date from around 2500 BC.
